About the Presenters:
Herschel Evans, Professional Truck Driver and an America’s Road Team Captain
Herschel Evans is an LTL driver for Yellow and has been a professional truck driver for 32 years. He has accumulated over 3.1 million accident–free miles. Herschel is also an ATA America’s Road Team Captain, and shares the message of highway safety, increasing visibility of the trucking industry and emphasizing the essentiality of trucking, America’s Road Team captains act as goodwill ambassadors nationwide.
Herschel has achieved the following awards from the Georgia State Truck Driving Championships: 2012 Georgia Driver of the Year, Georgia Rookie of the Year and Grand Champion in 2006, Five-axle Champion in 2006, 2008, 2011, and 2012, Sleeper Berth Champion in 2017 and 2018. Herschel also competed in the National Truck Driving Championships and was the five-axle champion in 2008 and 2011. In 2019, Herschel received his 21 year Safe Driving Award from Yellow. He is a driver trainer/mentor, a member of the Yellow Accident Review Board, and the Yellow Safety Committee. Herschel has spent 32 years participating in and organizing Atlanta’s Ride for Kids, benefitting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) of the U.S. For the last seven years he has been the lead organizer of the Safety Drive for a Cure, a truck safety and skills competition that also raises funds for the PBTF. In 2017, Herschel received the International Driver Excellence Award from the North American Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.
Kathleen Martz, National Regions and Affiliate Program Manager, US EPA SmartWay
Kathleen has been with EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality for 17 years. She initiated SmartWay’s expansion into Canada, worked on the development of the SmartWay data base, design of Partner tools, on program policies and processes, including data quality. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Lawrence Technological University, magna cum laude.
Patrice Thornton, Environmental Protection Specialist, US EPA SmartWay
Patrice Thornton has over 20 years of experience working in environmental policy, communications and public outreach. Patrice is currently responsible for administering communications and outreach programs targeted to the freight industry in support of the SmartWay program, EPA’s flagship program to improve efficiencies in the goods movement industry. She has extensive experience communicating the value and benefits of sustainable freight transportation through her work with SmartWay.
Patrice holds a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology from Wayne State University, located in Detroit, Michigan.
